Parshall Flume Calculator
Free-flow discharge through a standard Parshall flume from the upstream measuring head, for every throat width from 1 inch to 50 feet, with an optional downstream head to check whether the flume is still in free flow.
Leave Hb blank or 0 if the flume discharges freely with no downstream gauge. Heads are referenced to the flume crest. Defaults: 2-ft flume, Ha = 1.5 ft, Hb = 0.9 ft (60% submerged — still free flow).
Parshall flume coefficients by throat width
Each standard size was calibrated separately (some of the largest by scale model), so C and n are not a smooth function of W and flumes must be built to the standard dimensions for their size. Coefficients below are USBR Table 8-6; submergence limits are from the same section.

USBR lists the 8-ft flume at the boundary of both the 70% and 80% groups; this calculator uses the more conservative 70%. The 1-in flume passes 0.03 ft³/s at the minimum recommended head of 0.2 ft; below 0.2 ft, head-reading precision and surface tension degrade accuracy for flumes up to 1 ft wide.

Parshall flume or long-throated flume?
USBR no longer generally recommends Parshall flumes for new installations. Long-throated (ramp or Replogle) flumes are cheaper to build, tolerate submergence up to about 90% with a single head reading, and can be rated by computer from as-built dimensions. Parshall flumes remain common because thousands are already in service and some state water laws and compacts require them. Designing a Parshall flume to operate submerged is poor practice: head-reading error adds 4–20% to the discharge uncertainty on top of the 3–5% free-flow accuracy.
