Reinforced Concrete Beam Design — Rebar, Stirrups & Cracked Section (ACI 318-19)

Choose bar counts and sizes for a rectangular or T-beam and check it against ACI 318-19. Flexure is solved by strain compatibility, so compression steel that does not yield and stress blocks that drop below the flange are handled exactly. The calculator also gives the steel area required for your Mu, the shear capacity and stirrup spacing, and the cracked transformed section (kd, Icr, Mcr) for deflection and crack-control checks.

Strain compatibility (εcu = 0.003) with the Whitney block, solved for c by equilibrium:
$$ 0.85 f'_c \, A_{comp}(a) + A'_s \left(f'_s - 0.85 f'_c\right) = A_s f_s, \qquad a = \beta_1 c, \qquad \varepsilon_t = 0.003\,\frac{d-c}{c} $$
$$ M_n = 0.85 f'_c A_{comp} \left(d - \bar{y}_{c}\right) + A'_s \left(f'_s - 0.85 f'_c\right)(d - d') $$
Tension-controlled when εt ≥ εty + 0.003 (φ = 0.90); compression-controlled when εt ≤ εty (φ = 0.65).
Shear, with Av ≥ Av,min:
$$ V_c = \max\left[\,2\lambda\sqrt{f'_c}\,b_w d,\; 8\lambda\,\rho_w^{1/3}\sqrt{f'_c}\,b_w d\,\right] \le 5\lambda\sqrt{f'_c}\,b_w d, \qquad V_s = \frac{A_v f_{yt} d}{s} $$
Cracked neutral axis (first moment of the transformed area about the axis = 0):
$$ \frac{b\,(kd)^2}{2} + (n-1)A'_s\,(kd - d') = n A_s\,(d - kd) $$
Acomp concrete area within depth a (flange, plus web below it for a T-beam) · ȳc its centroid from the top · d′ depth to compression steel · εty = fy/Es · ρw = As/(bwd) · λs = √(2/(1 + d/10)) ≤ 1 size-effect factor used when Av < Av,min.

How the flexure check works

ACI 318 assumes plane sections remain plane, concrete crushes at a strain of 0.003, and steel is elastic–perfectly plastic. For any trial neutral-axis depth c, the strain at each bar layer follows from similar triangles, the bar stress is Esε capped at fy, and the concrete compression is the Whitney block 0.85f′c over depth a = β1c. The calculator finds the c that balances tension and compression, then takes moments. This is the same procedure as the textbook "assume compression steel yields, then check" method, but it never needs the second iteration: if the compression bars are still elastic, the strain-compatibility solution already has their true stress. Where the compression bars sit inside the stress block, the concrete they displace (0.85f′cA′s) is subtracted.

For a T-beam, if a ≤ hf the beam behaves as a rectangle of width bf. If a > hf, the full flange plus the web down to depth a is in compression and the compression centroid moves down accordingly.

εty = fy/Es = 0.00207 for Grade 60, so the tension-controlled limit is 0.00507. For Grade 80 it is 0.00576.

Shear and stirrups

ACI 318-19 rewrote the one-way shear equations. When the beam has at least Av,min, you may use the familiar 2λ√f′cbwd or the newer 8λρw1/3√f′cbwd, which rewards heavily reinforced beams; the calculator takes the larger. Without Av,min, the ρw form must be used with the size-effect factor λs, which reduces Vc for beams deeper than about 10 in. The "spacing needed for Vu" output is the smallest of the spacing that supplies the required Vs, the spacing that still gives Av,min, and smax.

Cracked section, deflection and crack control

Once the service moment passes Mcr = frIg/yt (fr = 7.5λ√f′c), the tension concrete cracks and stiffness drops toward Icr. The cracked neutral axis kd and Icr are the inputs to the effective moment of inertia in ACI 318-19 Table 24.2.3.5, where Ie = Icr/[1 − ((2/3)Mcr/Ma)²(1 − Icr/Ig)] for Ma > (2/3)Mcr. The service steel stress fs = nMa(d − kd)/Icr drives the crack-control limit of §24.3.2: bar spacing s ≤ 15(40,000/fs) − 2.5cc ≤ 12(40,000/fs). If no service moment is entered, the code-permitted fs = (2/3)fy is used.

Worked example

12 × 24 in beam, 4-#8, #3 stirrups at 9 in

Given: b = 12 in, h = 24 in, f′c = 4,000 psi, Grade 60, 1.5 in clear cover, Mu = 250 kip·ft, Vu = 45 kip, Ma = 160 kip·ft.
d = 24 − 1.5 − 0.375 − 1.0/2 = 21.625 in; As = 4 × 0.79 = 3.16 in².
a = 3.16 × 60,000 / (0.85 × 4,000 × 12) = 4.65 in; c = 4.65/0.85 = 5.47 in; εt = 0.003(21.625 − 5.47)/5.47 = 0.0089 ≥ 0.00507 → φ = 0.90.
Mn = 189,600 × (21.625 − 2.32) / 12,000 = 305.0 kip·ft; φMn = 274.5 kip·ft ≥ 250. As,min = 200(12)(21.625)/60,000 = 0.865 in² (the 3√f′c term gives 0.82). Steel actually required for 250 kip·ft: 2.84 in².
Shear: Av = 2 × 0.11 = 0.22 in² ≥ Av,min = 50(12)(9)/60,000 = 0.09 in². Vc = 2(63.2)(12)(21.625) = 32.8 kip (the ρw form gives 30.2). Vs = 0.22(60)(21.625)/9 = 31.7 kip. φVn = 0.75(64.5) = 48.4 kip ≥ 45; s = 9 in ≤ d/2 = 10.8 in.
Cracked section: n = 29,000/3,605 = 8.04. 6(kd)² = 8.04(3.16)(21.625 − kd) → kd = 7.69 in. Icr = 12(7.69)³/3 + 25.4(13.94)² = 6,755 in⁴ (Ig = 13,824). Mcr = 474(13,824)/12 = 45.5 kip·ft. At Ma = 160 kip·ft, fs = 31.9 ksi and the crack-control spacing limit is 14.1 in.
4-#8 bottom bars with #3 two-leg stirrups at 9 in pass flexure (0.91), shear (0.93) and crack control.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate rebar for a concrete beam?

Start from the factored moment Mu. Assume φ = 0.90 and solve Mu = φ·As·fy·(d − a/2) with a = As·fy/(0.85·f′c·b). In closed form for a rectangular beam, Rn = Mu/(φbd²) and ρ = (0.85f′c/fy)[1 − √(1 − 2Rn/(0.85f′c))]. Pick bars with at least As = ρbd, then check As,min, bar spacing and that εt ≥ εty + 0.003. This calculator does the search numerically, including compression steel and T-beam flanges.

What changed for beam flexure in ACI 318-19?

The tension-controlled strain limit became εt ≥ εty + 0.003 (0.00507 for Grade 60) instead of a flat 0.005, so higher-grade bars need more strain. Nonprestressed beams with small axial load must be tension-controlled (§9.3.3.1); ACI 318-14 allowed εt down to 0.004 in the transition zone.

How is Vc calculated in ACI 318-19?

Table 22.5.5.1. When at least the minimum shear reinforcement Av,min is provided, Vc may be taken as 2λ√f′c·bw·d or 8λ(ρw)^(1/3)√f′c·bw·d. Without Av,min, Vc = 8λsλ(ρw)^(1/3)√f′c·bw·d, where the size-effect factor λs = √(2/(1 + d/10)) ≤ 1 penalizes deep members. Vc is capped at 5λ√f′c·bw·d, and √f′c is limited to 100 psi.

What is the maximum stirrup spacing?

For nonprestressed beams, d/2 but not more than 24 in while Vs ≤ 4√f′c·bw·d. Above that, halve it: d/4 but not more than 12 in. Vs may never exceed 8√f′c·bw·d; beyond that the section must be enlarged.

When is minimum shear reinforcement required?

ACI 318-19 §9.6.3.1 requires Av,min wherever Vu > φλ√f′c·bw·d, with exceptions in Table 9.6.3.1 for shallow members and slabs. Av,min = max(0.75√f′c, 50)·bw·s/fyt.

What is kd in a cracked concrete section?

kd is the depth of the neutral axis of the cracked transformed section, measured from the compression face. Concrete below it is assumed cracked and ignored, and the steel is transformed to n·As with n = Es/Ec. kd comes from setting the first moment of the transformed area about the axis to zero; Icr follows from the parallel-axis theorem and feeds the effective moment of inertia used for deflection.
